Embracing The Darkness: Permission To Land

If you bypassed the darkness, by only listening to “I believe In A Thing Called Love”, STOP LISTENING TO IT NOW, FORGET ABOUT IT, go back in time to 2003-2004 and actually listen to Permission To Land. This album rocks hard as fuck. I was listening to it the other day trying to see if I still liked it and realized that classic rock is still alive. You might think I’m crazy, and you’re very well right to believe so, but there are so many good elements that make this album killer. Ultimately I can say that if you’re a fan of Foxy Shazam, or you ever wondered what a fusion of Queen and AC/DC would sound like, then take a moment to hear them out.

Permission To Land reached number 36 on the American 200 Billboard Charts when it came out, having previously gone number 1 in the U.K, and with good reason. The first song on Permission, “Black Shuck” starts off with mean distortion and one badass riff that hook you from the first second you listen. It reminds you how essential it is to have that biting crunch of Marshall Stacks and a Gibson Les Paul in your life.  However if Justin Hawkins’ falsetto-like vocals are too much for you in this song, there are other options. “Love is only a Feeling”, another single from the album, is a beautiful song that brings out Justin’s true vocals for what they really are, smooth and full.

The most badass song from this album has to be “Givin’ Up”, which at first i thought was called “Get Her To Fuck” because of Grooveshark, but the song brings all of the great elements of the Darkness together. Honestly if there’s one song you have to go away, it has to be this one, even though the lyrics are blatantly about shooting heroin “well I've ruined nearly all of my veins/ sticking that fucking shit into my arms”. But it’s a fun song that reminds us about how we used to take our parent’s money to get fucked up… not that we still don’t do that every now and then.

Honestly, I would go on, but if I continued babbling about other songs on Permission To Land, I’d probably be using the same words over and over, like crunch, and kickass, and hard as fuck, so I think you should get the point by now; the album KICKS ASS. So go listen to it, skip track number four, and then once you’re feeling good, then play “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” and just appreciate like its brand new. It’ll feel good.
